Ways to Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are a rising disease in our nation; however, there are some misconceptions many patients and even doctors have. Nevertheless, kidney stones are painful and found in 1 in every 10 people in the U.S. In order to help everyone stay kidney stone free, here are some great tips to follow what NOT to do and what TO do.

First, avoid situations and heavy exercise that promote sweating. While sweating is a good sign of improving your physical health or just effects of the temperature, it decreases urine production, which increases your chances of kidney stones. To prevent this, drink lots of water!

Second, do not fall to the misconception that removing oxalate rich foods will prevent kidney stones because most kidney stones are formed when oxalate binds to calcium while urine is produced by the kidneys. Instead, eat foods with calcium and oxalate rich foods, such as, spinach, beets, and peanuts.

Third, calcium is not the enemy either, if you set up the proper diet with oxalate AND calcium they are more likely to bind to one another in the stomach and intestines before the kidneys begin processing, making it less likely that kidney stones will form.

Fourth, kidney stones do no just happen one time, so precautions need to be made. About 15% of kidney stone patients didn’t take prescribed medications and 41% did not follow the nutritional advice that would keep stones from recurring. Be careful- Make sure to correctly adjust your diet and take proper medications to treat kidney stones. Also, get checked out for kidney disease if your kidney stones keep re-appearing.

Fifth, it is important to consider dietary remedies alongside prescription medications. While it may seem easier to just take a pill to fix a medical problem, consider what lifestyle changes will also make a big impact on your health. Fun fact, lemonade and other citrus juices offers the same stone-preventing benefits. However, be very careful with the amount of sugar you intake!

Sixth, there are different types and forms of kidney stones, so be aware. An example of a different type of kidney stones is a uric acid stone: moreover, higher uric acid excretion leads to lower overall urine pH, which means the urine is more acidic. The high acid concentration of the urine makes it easier for uric acid stones to form. Again, minding your diet is very important; avoid foods with high-purine content.
