Urine test could help predict recurrence of bladder cancer

Researchers from the Department of Urology at the University of Southern California Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles have developed a new strategy to predict the recurrence of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer is widely known for its ability to reoccur. This new method of testing for recurrence involves measuring three DNA methylation markers in urine. This method shows a large fold increase in the percentage of tumor recurrences it is able to detect compared to standard methods of watching for tumor recurrence. The DNA methylation method is done through the DNA in a patient’s urine and is not invasive.
